Abstract
Although the morphology of the ovarian dermoid cysts is grossly and microscopically well established, for most clinicians a dermoid cyst still implies and an ovarian cystic tumor containing large amount of buttery pultaceous material admixed with numerous hairs and occasionally presenting portions of bone or teeth. Careful histologic analysis from different areas of these tumors frequently discloses numerous other tissue derived from all primitive germ layers.
Groeber and Booth in separate articles indicate that dermoids are the most common tumors.found in infancy, in childhood and during pregnancy. But Loeb and Levy analyzed 607 cases of ovarian tumors in relationship to age incidence. He observed 34 patient between the ages of 6¢¥ and 20 and reported no case in a child below the age of six.
Lexer reported a dermoid cyst in a 7-week-old infant, and Pye-Smith found one in a child of 10 months of age.
This patient is 5 year and 6 months old girl. She has suffered from lower abdominal mass and occasionally fever for one year and three months.
On histopathologic study, this specimen revealed of characteristics of benign cystic teratoma such as skin, hair follicles, and fatty tissue. No malignant change nor metastasis is seen. The brief review of the literature was done.
